Abstract
Wound pain is the primary concern for most wound patients. Ibuprofen foam dressing (BiatainIbu¨Þ) is a dressing that releases ibuprofen. In Europe, there have been studies and it is widely used for reduction of wound pain. However, there was no clinical study in Korea. The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of ibuprofen foam dressing on wound pain in Korean patients. This study included 40 patients undergoing split thickness skin graft. In the test group, the donor sites were covered using ibuprofen foam. The control group was dressed using ibuprofen-free foam. Wound pain intensity was measured using a Faces Pain Rating Scale (FPRS) and pain relief was measured utilizing a Verbal Description Scale (VDS) at wearing dressing and the point of dressing change. In addition, amounts of intake of pain-relieving medicine were compared between two groups. Ibuprofen-releasing foams demonstrated much superior effect to ibuprofen-free dressings in pain intensity at wearing the dressings and in pain relief (P=0.01 and P=0.04, respectively). There was no significant difference between two groups in pain intensity at the point of dressing change and in the amount of medicine taken (P=0.82 and P=0.77, respectively). The study shows Ibuprofen-releasing foam may offer a valuable therapeutic approach to the reduction of wound pain in Korean patients.
